Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES)

Testing Information
The State of Texas wants to ensure that each educator in public schools has the necessary content and professional knowledge to perform satisfactorily, so Texas law requires every person seeking educator certification to perform satisfactorily on a minimum of two comprehensive examinations. The new Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) was developed in 2000 for this purpose.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC), the state agencies in Austin, are responsible for educator certification in Texas. The TExES tests are one component of the certification process.

Anyone seeking certification in the state of Texas must take a pedagogy examination and a content examination. Future teachers must prove to the state that they know how to teach (pedagogy) and they must prove their knowledge in their content area. Other examinations may be required, so students should check their certification plan for required exams.

State certification exams are offered as paper based tests (PBT) and some are offered as computer administered tests (CATs). Please see CATs for more information.

State certification PBTs are offered four times a year. All tests are offered during each test administration.

CATs are given year round, except holidays.

TAMUCC is a site for PBTs and CATs. CATs are also given off campus.

Students request to test and register for the particular certification test(s) they need. During the registeration process, choices will be provided on when and where to test.

Please visit the ETS web site http://www.texes.ets.org for more specific information.

TExES Certification levels are:

  • Early Childhood - 4th Grades (test ends 6/26/2010)
  • Early Childhood - 6th Grades
  • 4th - 8th Grades
  • 8th - 12th Grades
  • Early Childhood - 12th Grades

TYPE OF TEST

All TExES examinations are criterion referenced multiple choice tests. They are designed to measure the tester's knowledge in relation to an established standard of competence (criterion) rather than to the performance of other test takers.
